The 4th Annual Myrna Loy Center’s Short Film & Video Competition, Screening July 26, 8:00 pm $8

The Competition

The Myrna Loy Center invites all Helena-area filmmakers to sign up for its 72-hour film competition before July 12. This is the 4th year for Myrna’s Short Film & Video Festival. The one-night screening draws a sellout crowd of curious fans to see how locally famous (and infamous) filmmakers have met the challenge. “Past entries have been styled as documentaries, mock-umentaries, mysteries, comedies … really any style,” says Benji Cosgrove, the Competition’s founder and producer. “You’ll be impressed with the inventiveness and savvy of the participants.”
Here’s how it works: The competition is open to 15 filmmakers. (Stop by the Myrna Loy Center to sign up before the July 12 deadline.) At 5:00 pm on Friday, July 16, the Myrna Loy will email every participant with the defining theme or concept of the contest. “I issue the competitors their topic,” says Cosgrove. “In past years it has been time, money, and last year, speed. Filmmakers come up with their personal take on the subject and run with it.” Participants have until 5:00 pm on Monday, July 19, to hand in their finished film. “We have a few returning filmmakers each year who consistently submit high-quality shorts, but we are always looking for new talent.”
A few rules apply. The film can’t be longer than 6 minutes. It must address or include the theme or concept of the contest. It must be PG-13. And it must be submitted on DVD. (Other rules are explained on the sign-up form.)
At 8:00 pm on Monday, July 26, the MLC will celebrate Helena-area filmmaking by screening ALL official entries. Prizes will be given for the top tree films as judged by a panel of local artists.
