Jill and Julia Show

Monday, June 28
8:00 pm
$25

SNL star Julia Sweeney joins another TED favorite, Jill Sobule, for a delightful set that mixes witty songwriting with a bit of social commentary. The Jill and Julia Show is a delightful, wildly entertaining mash-up of music, comedy, improvisation and monologues. This one- of-a-kind performance revolves around embedding Julia's stories into songs of Jill's that share a common theme creating a sum greater than the individual parts.

Known for her four-year run on Saturday Night Live and her powerful solo shows, Julia Sweeney continues to carve out her own territory in entertainment, one that moves between the personal and the political, the controversial and the comical.

Jill Sobule's work is at once deeply personal and socially conscious, seriously funny and derisively tragic. Over seven albums and a decade of recording, Jill has mused on topics such as the death penalty, anorexia, shoplifting, reproduction, the French resistance movement, adolescence, and the Christian right.

Punch Brothers featuring Chris Thile

$30

Collecting five singular abilities and viewpoints into one musical force, Punch Brothers featuring Chris Thile have established their place among the most dynamic and talented presences across the full range of contemporary music-making. As performing and recording artists, composers and interpreters, technicians and stylists, Grammy-nominees, they continue to push the boundaries of possibility while maintaining an unerring devotion to the basic audience experience.

Chris Thile has changed the mandolin forever, elevating it from its origins as a relatively simple folk and bluegrass instrument to the sophistication and brilliance of the finest jazz improvisation and classical performance.

His equally youthful, prodigiously gifted band-mates are among the most in-demand performers in the worlds of bluegrass, folk and traditional music: Guitarist Chris Eldridge (founding member of the Infamous Stringdusters at MLC on 8/30), Paul Kowert, bassist from The Seldom Scene; Noam Pikelny, banjo; Gabe Witcher, violinist, has recorded with Willie Nelson and Beck. The Punch Bros. are the best string-band pickers of the new generation. Describing their music as “bluegrass” is too narrow for the band’s wide-ranging, ground-breaking style which swings with breathtaking velocity from the tender to the robust.

The Infamous Stringdusters have arrived at a sound that pleases blue-grassers and hipsters alike–seamlessly welding tradition and innovation into an irresistible “new-grass” sound. They became friends after running into one another, either doing session work or at live gigs with other bands. It didn’t take long for them to realize that they shared a passion for true, innovative bluegrass and string music. Not long after, they decided to give it a go of their own and the result is Fork In The Road—‘one of the most impressive albums by a young new band in contemporary bluegrass since Nickel Creek first appeared like a beacon with their debut” (Ruehl, about.com). Possessed with mean-pickin’ power, Stringdusters play original music with sweet vocal delivery and hoppin’ instrumentals that will definitely get your toes to tappin’.
