Jailhouse

Bruce Wood Dance Company

Tuesday, January 18, 7:30 p.m.
Helena Civic Center

Bruce Wood was a George Balanchine-trained principal dancer for the New York Ballet and San Francisco Ballet before he was given his life's greatest challenge: to create a ballet for a small dance company in Austin, Texas. His life was transformed, and he was driven to form the Bruce Wood Dance Company to showcase his subsequent works.

This performance will feature some stunning performances from the heart of modern dance. The program includes new works performed to music of Philip Glass and Lyle Lovett, as well as a new ballet that debuted in early 2004 that honors people in the military service.

Ian Tyson

Friday, January 21, 8:00 p.m.
Myrna Loy Center

The legendary Ian Tyson, composer of "Navajo Rug," "Four Strong Winds" and "Someday Soon," as well as a number of cowboy and folk classics, will perform an intimate concert for all those who hated to miss him last winter.

Ian Tyson began his career as a folk singer (the great half of Ian and Sylvia), then re-invented his career about 20 years ago when he presented his own personal brand of cowboy songs to a wildly enthusiastic audience at the Elko,

Nevada Cowboy Poetry Gathering. He's now in his 70s, winner of numerous music awards, and "remains the best singer and songwriter in Canadian Country music" (Montreal Gazette).

Ian Tyson is as engaging as he's ever been. His older songs are as fresh as dew on a sweetgrass meadow, and his new pieces reflect the dignity, heartbreak and joy of a poetic man who has lived a great life on the Northern prairie.

Philip Aaberg and Eugene Friesen
Including performance of new Aaberg music

Thursday, January 27, 7:30 p.m.
Myrna Loy Center

The Aaberg/Friesen Duo merges pretty much every American music tradition into a circus of virtuosity, improvisation and soul. This is chamber music-but the chamber is a fun house that shifts shape, color and furnishings with every tune, and may go from being a meditation room to a horse trailer in the span of 5 minutes. The two have separately, at one time or another, been at the forefront of many new music trends, yet have kept their grounding in various American traditions: classical, bluegrass, rock and roll, and folk music. Their improvisational skills are at an extraordinary level...so expect the unexpected!

with special opener Remembering Joseph by Darrell Casey

Monday, July 11, 8:00 p.m.

Their duet of contrasting art forms is a Corps of Discovery in itself.

They are joined tonight by guitarist Darrell Casey (of the Watercarver's Guild) who marked the 100th anniversary of the death of Chief Joseph (in 2004) by composing a piece for solo guitar. Casey will open the performance with Remembering Joseph, in honor of the great Nez Perce Chief.

Black Irish Band

Monday, July 25, 8:00 p.m.
Myrna Loy Center

"Songs about the Forest Service and Other Music" is the title of this knockout evening designed by the Black Irish Band to celebrate the history of the U.S. Forest Service in Montana and across the West. The Black Irish Band mixes historical songs and tunes based on the stories of the Gold Rush and the building of the railroads.

Patrick Michael Karnahan's songs are articulate narrative ballads -"Underneath Montana Skies" stands out in particular - "Rocky Road to Reno" mixes Celtic folk with Spanish brass. "16" sounds vaguely like the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and "Men of Iron" has bluegrass affinities. This is the band's second stop at the Myrna Loy Center and we're excited to have them back.

Composer Kelli Roberti with MJ Williams Quartet: Ghost Tango Project
While living in Paris in 1996 jazz musician and composer Kelli Roberti became enthralled with the romance of Tango music. "I would journey into the Metro to listen to the wonderful street musicians, and many of them were playing Tango, both conventional and modern," Roberti says. "The rhythm and heart of the music truly struck me. Upon returning to Montana in '97 I proceeded to study the history, form and dance of the genre. This was the beginning of a series of compositions that, unbeknown to me, would snowball into 13 tangos of my own making…. I am totally grateful and relieved to finally get the opportunity to present the series." Roberti's Ghost Tango Project will be performed here by Montana's stupendous M J Williams Quartet.

The Myrna Loy Center has curated these premier NWNW performances as part of The Northwest New Works Program (see www.ontheboards.org) showcasing new works and performance experiments by artists of the Northwest.

Imani Winds

At first, their weaving together of Pan-African and European musical sensibilities raised eyebrows in the classical music world. Now, after performing their mix of original compositions, African-American spirituals, jazz and edgy contemporary pieces at Alice Tully Hall, on Saint Paul Sunday and Perfomance Today, and at Carnegie Hall, they have won even the stodgiest hearts. Reviewers call them "radiant," "pivotal," and "luxuriant."
